And I meant to post this here weeks and weeks ago, whoops.
^^; So, I ended up writing an essay about Kiryu in the RP advice meme...so I thought I might as well post it here too, as a kind of extension to his personality section, especially since that was written before 54-55. Behold, my mastery of coherency at 2-3 am.
XD I could add his decks in here and how each explains how he acted a little further, but...that's okay. I'll leave it.
TS-era:
Kiryu is first and foremost an egotist. He's in the right, no matter what. By extension, this makes him a leader to the core. He doesn't like following people; he'd much rather make his own path. His number one goal is to be the best and to be on top. And he doesn't mind being forceful to do it, since it's helping him, so it must be an okay thing to do.
He does have a strong sense of justice, but the core of it centers around him. If someone hurts him, they deserve to be hurt in return. There's little room for forgiveness in his world.
However, he's also very caring toward his team, especially Yuusei. He's willing to die for them, and he was pretty hurt when Jack and Crow, and then eventually Yuusei, left him. He was even willing to forgive Jack and Crow and let them help him again if they would come back. He's a people person; he doesn't like being alone. Conquering Satellite was probably just as much for his team as it was for them.
The biggest thing to remember, though, is that Kiryu isn't inherently a bad person, nor does he realize that his actions aren't always good. He wants to do what's best for him and his team, but he can't recognize that sometimes he takes things too far. (This is especially true after the Zone M stuff; before that, he hadn't quite started losing it.)
Dark Signer:
I think the biggest thing to remember here is that Kiryu didn't lose everything he was by becoming a Dark Signer. He is, at his core, still the leader of Team Satisfaction. In fact, he seems to cling to that.
Kiryu's experiences in prison changed his perceptions slightly. He was "betrayed" by his best friend, someone who he trusted to be there for him. His entire team seemed to abandon him completely, leaving him alone. And he fell from his perch as a powerful figure in Satellite, to being beaten constantly by people he despised.
In fact, he lost hope, which is a BIG thing for him.
Then something came along that he could never surpass: Ccapac Apu. At that point, he was desperate and hopeless and pretty damn angry at Yuusei for getting him in that position. Ccapac Apu gave him the chance to take revenge and be important again.
As a Dark Signer, Kiryu isn't the leader. That's okay, because he can acknowledge that the EBGs and Rudger are more powerful than he is, not to mention he's eternally grateful to them. However, he still does things his own way; he chooses to leave Yuusei alive after their first duel, even though Rudger was angry at him for it afterward (which also shows he has a bit of honor; the duel was interrupted, so he honored that and chose to fight another day.
He also still has a lot of lingering feelings for Team Satisfaction. He references it constantly, even "reliving" their "last duel" so it could play out how he wanted it. Although he's possibly the Dark Signer most loyal to his God, he does have a place in his heart deep, deep down where he just wants to be Yuusei's friend again.
As a character, he's extremely energetic and extremely hateful, and that plays a big factor in his madness. Most of the time, he's smiling and laughing and definitely not all there. He'll laugh at any little thing, and then not laugh when you'd think he would. He usually laughs when it's completely inappropriate. His outward emotions aren't what you'd expect for what's going on around him. And he definitely has a bit of a sadistic streak, especially toward people who annoy him or who have upset him.
But, as most of the time what he's actually feeling is hatred and blind fury toward Yuusei, when he's angry, you know it. He's loud and to the point. And he usually doesn't listen to the opposing argument, because, of course, he's the one who's right. He can also get ticked off by every little thing, but especially police types, know-it-alls, and anyone who acts self-righteous. However, he doesn't usually sound angry for long; he goes back to laughing and mocking you in the next line.
The easiest way to think about how he acts is that he's like a fire; he can be relatively calm and fun to be around one minute, and the next he terrifying and out of control. And the next he's playful again.
